John the Baptist
Preparing the way of the Lord!
Once there was a priest named Zecharias and his wife, Elizabeth. They were a little sad because they were old and still had no children.
One day God sent an angel to Zecharias. The angel told him he and Elizabeth would have a child and they should name him John.
Zecharias did not believe him, so the angel told him he would not be able to speak until the baby was born.
And soon Elizabeth and Zecharias did have a baby. They were so happy! And Zecharias could speak again!
When John grew up, he lived in the wilderness. He wore clothes of camel's hair with a leather belt. He ate locusts and wild honey.
John began to baptize people in the Jordan River. He taught them to ask God's forgiveness when they did bad things. He told them that soon God's Son would come.
One day Jesus came to the river. He asked John to baptize Him. Then the Holy Spirit came down on Jesus like a dove. A voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, and I love Him."
John knew then that Jesus was God's Son. Jesus later said about John, "This is the one about whom it is written: 'BEHOLD! I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare the way before you.' and he continued, "...there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist!"
